Wu Yunxin & the Old Theatre Inn (formerly Dragonfly Guesthouse)
Wu Yunxin moved to Shaxi from the nearby city of Jianchuan in the early 1990s to teach English in a small elementary school. There he met his future wife who was also a teacher at the school. Mr. Wu has converted an ancient village theater into one of the more interesting guesthouses in China. Rooms come with all the creature comforts, including hot showers and western toilets. And wake early in the morning to sip your tea overlooking Shaxi's expansive valley.
Mr. Wu’s English is impeccable. Even now, his desire to learn and understand English and the Western world-view is as strong as ever. His enthusiasm towards trekking and his compassion towards everyone he meets make him an ideal tour guide. Spending time with him and his family is one of the high points of any trip to Shaxi. Not to mention the fact that Mrs. Wu cooks up some of the finest Bai-style cuisine that Yunnan has to offer.
In addition to staying at the Wu's Old Theatre Inn, there is other Shaxi accommodation that is suitable for budget travel. In the nearby village of Xia Ke, the Li Family welcome visitors to stay with them in their courtyard home. There are 2 double rooms and large rooms for up to 10 people in a group, all with newly built, very clean common bathrooms. The family can cook, or your are welcome to cook in their kitchen, which has been set up for visitors. For more information, please contact Wu Yunxin.
Mr. Wu is also a licensed driver and has his own vehicle. He can help you plan trips through Shaxi or elsewhere in Yunnan.
