This two day hike is one of Shaxi's highlights. The first day, hike for approximately 6 hours along the ancient salt trade route deep into the mountains. Along the way pass horse caravans and meet the wood collectors and traders who supply the Shaxi valley with its lumber. Drink from fresh mountain springs and enjoy the grand views. In the afternoon arrive at Ma Ping Guan, Bai Minority village. Ma Ping Guan is a small village of just a hundred or so farmers. It is a beautiful old village that grew out of the necessity to supply passing traders with food and lodging. Stay at a local family's and eat delicious local grown foods. Spend the night around the hearth chatting and laughing with your gracious hosts. The second day, wake up early and stroll around the village.Before noon, depart for the 5 hour hike down. Hike through ancient forests of tall trees draped in moss. Arrive at the town of Misha, to one of the areas most important salt wells. Back to Shaxi by car.

Shaxi Shibaoshan Grottoes
Shaxi Shibaoshan (石宝山) is the general name for the national heritage temple complex and cave sculptures in the mountains above Shaxi. The area has a history of over 1,000 years and features some of the most breathtaking mountain temples in Yunnan. Connected with the Ajali sect of esoteric Buddhism, the "Stone Treasure Mountain Grottoes" or (Shízhōng Shān Shíkū, 石钟山石窟) of Shizhong Temple can be accessed by wooded mountain trails from the Pear Orchard Temple 慈荫庵 (Sheltered Mercy Nunnery) in Shaxi. Along with the grottoes there is the beautifully preserved Ming Dynasty nunnery Hai Yun Ju (海云居) featuring a three-story white jade Buddha from Burma. Beginning in late 2015, the Visitor's Centre at Pear Orchard Temple will offer horse trekking up the ancient trail from the temple to Shibaoshan, a journey of about one hour.
